Upper Dolpo trek is also known as the Shey-Gompa Trek that the Gompa is one of the outstanding attractions during the trek. This adventurous trekking includes different high passes and technical high passes.
Beginning the trek from Juphal airstrip, it goes through the wonderful Tibetan Buddhist settlements. Once you reach to the district center of Dolpo- Dunai, you climb up towards the Phoksundo Lake via Ankhe. The largely spread blue Lake is the naturally loaded beauty of the Dolpo region as a whole. Phoksundo National Park bound the trekking part. Then the hidden part of the Phoksundo Khola begins. Reaching Shey Gompa via Phoksundo Bhanjyang, you will get an opportunity to explore the last commune of pure Tibetan culture. It has got a vast scenario of the pre-Chinese Tibetan civilizations, which are known as Bon Po. The altitude increases and still there are settlements, who are living in some of the highest located villages. The trail still has got jaw dropping rocky boulders that you have to overcome. Tibetan priests and Lamas come to this sacred part of the Himalayas to meditate and get the enlightenment.
While walking through the traditional villages in Upper Dolpo, you can witness the real life of the people, who follow the animal husbandry profession and they also do some farming on the possible areas. There are also hidden green valleys. Many organizations have tried different way outs to uplift the poor situations of the people. French school and other schools have been established to educate the kids. People also search the caterpillar fungus (Yarshagumba) on the alpine meadows.
Following the beauties that Erick Valley once had projected in his film, Himalayan Caravan, you trek via Saldang and Dho Tarap. Kang La pass (5360m), Saldang La pass (4,785m), Jeng La (4369m) and Jeng La pass (4845m) are some technical high passes during the trek to Upper Dolpo. Then it treks down to Juphal and fly further.
