Is the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek Difficult?

Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek is considered to be a challenging trekking route in Nepal. With over 5160 meters to ascend and return, the Tsum Valley Trek with Manaslu Circuit might not be an ideal destination for trekkers with no prior experience. There are several challenges like walking for over 6 to 7 hours every day, altitude sickness due to high altitude, and gradually reaching an isolated area with very less to no human settlements at all.

Trekkers might also face difficulties in getting proper food and accommodation in the higher altitudes due to the lack of hotels and tea houses. The difficulty gets on your nerves when you reach the Larkya La Pass because it is located at a very high altitude. Many people find it difficult even to ascend from the halfway of the trek. Therefore, we request people to train properly and keep themselves fit and healthy before actually going for the Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek. Moreover, Adventure Bound suggests people with no experience refrain from ascending this trekking route.

How to Prepare for the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek?

Trekking in the Himalayas of Nepal certainly is not a simple thing to do. Especially for challenging trekking routes like Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley, preparations need to be even more advanced and detailed. Remember that in such dreaded conditions, even small misunderstandings and mistakes can have a huge impact. There are many ways to prepare for the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek which we have listed below:

Physical Training

The most important factor in a safe and successful trekking experience is proper physical training. To ascend strenuous treks like Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley, trekkers certainly need to be in perfect shape and fitness level. For physical training, we recommend trekkers go to the gym, prioritize running, and play other outdoor sports to enhance cardiovascular health. Moreover, you can also go for several other less difficult trekking routes for practice.

Adventure Bound offers several other trekking packages as well if you want to go for a rather easy trekking adventure to practice for the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trekking.

Do as much regular exercise as possible, eat healthy, sleep well, and drink a lot of water because all of these practices are very important to have better health and stamina for trekking. Also, started training several months ago because fitness does not come within one week or one month. Once you feel like you are in perfect health and shape, that is when you go for this trek.

Mental Preparation

Being physically fit and ready is one part of the story but along with that trekkers must also be mentally ready for the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek. Many trekkers go with the excitement but have to return halfway because they are not mentally prepared for what comes in the higher parts of the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek. Try to do some meditation, and yoga, read blogs, and watch different videos about this trek, its route, and all the other factors associated with the Tsum Valley exploration with Manaslu Circuit.

While on the journey, we suggest trekkers not panic due to some obstacles. Be warrior enough to cope with those obstacles and have a strong mindset about completing the trek. By that being said, we also request you not to hide if you have any difficulties. If you feel like you cannot continue the journey, communicate with the guides.

Gear and Packing

Another major factor affecting the trekking journey is gear and the things you include in your backpacks. Be very smart and wise while packing your bag for the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trekking journey. Make sure that you include all the important documents, clothes, first aid, etc before anything else. Besides, you must also have a proper idea of how the gear works. Remember that in higher altitude trekking gear plays an important role in helping you ascend and descend. Therefore, understanding the mechanism of gear and packing wisely plays an important role in making your trek efficient and more adventurous.

Manaslu Circuit is enclosed by the Manaslu Conservation Area Project, so trekkers require permits to enter this area. Adventure Bound Nepal will arrange the permits as well on the same day.

  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Accommodation: Overnight at a comfortable hotel
  • Place: Kathmandu
  • Altitude: Altitude: 1400m

Our journey begins on the third day as we set off on a drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola. This drive goes from an altitude of 1400 meters to an altitude of 900 meters. During the drive, you can experience a drastic change in the landscapes, lifestyles, surrounding environment, and natural greenery. Besides, you can also see several waterfalls, rivers, forests, and hills and get a little closer to the mountains.

The journey involves traversing the Kathmandu valley toward Dhading Besi and navigating through areas where road construction might pose challenges. Heading northwest, the route leads to Arughat, situated across the Budhi Gandaki River.

From Arughat, the path advances to Sotikhola, with sections of gravel-lined roads. Progressing through Gurung and Magar villages, the trek proceeds to Soti Khola, culminating in the final leg toward Machha Khola. The scenic journey offers captivating vistas of the Shringri Himal along the way.

Driving from Kathmandu to Macchakhola takes around 8 to 9 hours and it can also be tiring. Therefore, we will take a rest for the night at Machha Khola.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in a comfortable lodge.
  • Place: Machha Khola
  • Altitude: 900m

After spending the night at Machha Khola, we have our breakfast in the morning and start the walking journey towards Jagat. The Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley's route from Machha Khola to Jagat is the beginning of one of the most adventurous journeys. You might feel this part of the trek a little difficult because of the ups and downs we come across.

However, the scenarios, landscapes, and especially the villages that we get to wander during this part of the Manaslu Tsum Valley Circuit Trek give you the strength and excitement to have a positive mindset while ascending. On the way, we also reach Tatopani (Natural Hot Water Spring) where trekkers can rest for some time and enjoy the hot water sauna. From there, we walk a little and ascend a short climb. After that, we cross the Budhi Gandaki River on a suspension bridge and reach Dovan.

Gradually the route takes us through a cantilever bridge to cross the Yaru River. However, reaching Jagat still has some walking to do. Yes, after crossing the bridge, we move towards a mountain, ascend that, and get down to a river corridor. As we reach Jagat, trekkers need to register their permits to access the Manaslu Conservation Area and further ascend in the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in a comfortable lodge.
  • Place: Jagat
  • Altitude: 1340m

From Jagat, the trail becomes a little more rugged and rough. Therefore, we request the trekkers to be more attentive and cautious. Before that, let us remind you that Jagat is highly inhabited by the Gurung settlement. As you cross the rugged ridge and reach Salleri, you will be amazed by the stunning view of Mount Singri. Well, did you know that this part of the Tsum Valley Trek with Manaslu Circuit also has the longest suspension bridge in Nepal?

Trekkers will get a chance to cross this bridge once they reach a village named Sirdibas. From Sirdibas, it takes around an hour-long ascend to reach another checkpoint of the day, Ekle Bhatti. On the entire journey, you get to walk inside forests, different settlements, and a magnificent canyon before finally reaching Lokpa. As soon as you step foot in Lokpa, the first thing you notice is the spectacular views of snow-covered Boudha Himal and Himalchuli.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in a comfortable lodge.
  • Place: Lokpa
  • Altitude: 2,240m

Lokpa certainly is a place you would love to spend a night at. Watching both sunset and sunrise to and from the Boudha Himal and Himchuli makes the place even more magical. Nevertheless, we need to ascend further. So, immediately after dinner, our guides will take you on another adventurous journey in the Tsum Valley Trek with the Manaslu Circuit route. Today, the trek is slightly shorter as we only have to walk for 4 to 5 hours.

Let us tell you that Chumling has three significant Gompas of the entire Manaslu Circuit with the Tsum Valley Trekking Trail and they are Panago Gumba, Mani Dhungyur, and Gurwa Gumba. Besides, almost the entire route is full of Mani Stones and Buddhist monks. As you reach the valley, you can also see a Chhorten established right at the center of the field.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in a comfortable lodge
  • Place: Chumling
  • Altitude: 2,386m

Another day brings another set of adventures. Seriously the adventure verse never actually ends in the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley expedition. Every day, there are new things to see, new experiences to be made, and new adventures to be done. On the seventh day, ascend from Chumling to reach Chokangparo.

Chokangparo is a beautiful and tradition-influenced town in the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trekking journey. Reaching this town from Chumling requires the trekkers to pass through a suspension bridge, a village named Domje, and also follow the path side-by-side to Syar Khola. From Domje the path starts ascending until we reach Gho village by passing Rainjam and crossing another bridge. However, even after all these, we do not stop at Chokangparo. From there, we walk a little further to reach Lamagaon and then to the Ranchen Gompa.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in a comfortable lodge
  • Place: Ranchen Gompa
  • Altitude: 3,031m

The trip from Chokangparo to the Nile is another beauty of nature and its routes. Where a few other travel agencies go from Chokangparo to Mu Gumpa directly, Adventure Bound that in a two-day format. The first part (till Nile) is walked on the eighth day. As this part of the Manaslu Tsum Valley Circuit Trek itself takes 5 to 6 hours of walk, reaching Mu Gumpa could be tiring and exhausting for the trekkers. Therefore, we prefer to take it slow but adventurous.

After reaching the Nile, we get to the hotel and rest there for the night. Also, we recommend trekkers to take proper rest and prepare themselves for what they will experience the next day. As the Nile is located at an altitude of 3361 meters, the chances of altitude sickness can increase from this point. Therefore, we suggest trekkers be hydrated and keep their bodies ready for the thinner air.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in a comfortable lodge
  • Place: Nile
  • Altitude: 3,361m

The ninth day can also be taken as the acclimatization day of the Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit trip because we do not advance to any other place on this day. For today, we would plan to go for a day trip to Mu Gompa and return to the Nile for the night. Trekkers do not need to carry heavy baggage for this day and can trek with higher flexibility and ease.

Mu Gompa is the highest point of the entire Tsum Valley and this place is also pretty much closer to the Tibetan Border. Due to that reason, you might witness that the lifestyle of Nepal's side is also highly influenced by Tibetan lifestyle and culture. We spend some time at Mu Gompa to appreciate and craftsmanship people of that era have devoted to this infrastructure and also get bounded by the soothing Buddhist tunes and chants.

After exploring the Gompa for a few hours, we descend back towards Nile because Mu Gompa does not have any tea houses or shops. Moreover, it is also necessary to ascend high and sleep low.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in a comfortable lodge
  • Place: Nile
  • Altitude: 3,361m

After the night's stay at the Nile, we will wake up in the morning, have breakfast, and return to Chokangparo. Now is the time to advance toward the highest point of the Manaslu Circuit. The journey from the Nile to Chokangparo takes only 4 to 5 hours. Being a descending journey, the walk also feels a little easier and faster.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in a comfortable lodge
  • Place: Chokangparo
  • Altitude: 3,031m

On the eleventh day, the journey begins after breakfast at the hotel. From Chokangparo, the route continues its beauty and serenity of nature. Accompanied by different mountains, rivers, forests, and views of stunning mountains, this part of the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek continues impressing the trekkers.

After walking for around 5 to 6 hours, we finally reached the village on the huge mountain terrace above the Shyar Khola. You will love the warm hospitality offered by the locals living in this village and also feel grateful for the scenic views this village offers.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in a comfortable lodge
  • Place: Ripchet
  • Altitude: 2470m

After taking a sound and comfortable rest in Ripchet, our Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley trek continues. On this part of the trek, we go on a descending track following Lokpa. From Lokpa, the route takes us to Gampul Bridge, which is also the starting point of the Manaslu Circuit route.

A few things that you might notice after entering the Manaslu Circuit are mules and more trekkers. After some more walking, we reach Pewa Khola and then the route gradually through the forest. The trail continues past Budi Gandaki. After walking for 20 km and around 7 to 8 hours, we finally reached Deng. a small village with magnificent landscapes.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in a comfortable lodge
  • Place: Deng
  • Altitude: 1860m

On the thirteenth day, we ascend from Deng to Namrung (2630 meters). This 7 to 8-hour walk takes us through several traditional settlements, lush forests, rivers, waterfalls, and suspension bridges. Besides, you can also get an amusing view of the Sringi Himal during this day's trek. Before reaching Namrumg, we also need to cross another village named Ghap. Before reaching Ghap, the trail meanders in and out of valley canyons, passing the Serang Khola.

From there, the trekkers get exposed to a few wild rivers, and steepened valleys and finally reach the destination of the day, Namrung. This place serves as the entry gate of the Upper Nuri where we can witness the Tibetan settlement.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in a comfortable lodge
  • Place: Namrung
  • Altitude: 2630m

On the fourteenth day, we leave Namrung to reach Lho. This part of the Manaslu Circuit Trek with Tsum Valley exploration gets a little steeper. Throughout the day, you will be accompanied by Himal Chuli and Ganesh Himal. As we reach a place named Lihi, the route descends towards the Simnang Valley and then to the Hinang River from where we can also see Ngadi Chuli.

From there, we advance towards another stop named Sho but on your way, we will also pass by a huge prayer wheel. After almost 4 to 5 hours of walking, we finally reach Lho where you can see the exceptional views of Manaslu North and Naike Himal. Moreover, this place is also famous for a local monastery named Ribung Monastery. We recommend the trekkers go to a nearby place named Kani to see one of the most beautiful sunsets.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in a comfortable lodge
  • Place: Lho
  • Altitude: 3157m

This walk of the Tsum Valley trek with Manaslu Circuit passes through Gompas, Tibetan settlements, and the beauties of landscapes. The best view that you get while ascending from Lho to Samagaon is the magnificent view of Mount Manaslu. Other than that, trekkers also get a chance to delve deeper into the religious and cultural beauty and the towering glacial mountains.

Moreover, this part of the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley route passes through Birendara Lake, Pumgyen Gompa, and the Pungyen monastery. Pungyen Monastery is a relaxing place located beneath Manaslu's east face.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in the lodge
  • Place: Samagaon
  • Altitude: 3530m

At Samagaon, Adventure Bound's guides have planned an acclimatization day. So, we will not be advancing to any other point on this day. Trekkers can take their time to explore Samagaon and can even hike up to the Manaslu Base Camp on this day. At Manaslu Base Camp, you can meet several other trekkers, explore the surroundings, and get a chance to check out the magnificent view of Manaslu Peak itself.

After spending a few hours at the Manaslu Base Camp (4800 meters), we return to the hotel/lodge in Samagaon. This completes the acclimatization day and trekkers are highly prepared to ascend further on the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trekking.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in the lodge
  • Place: Samagaon
  • Altitude: 3530m

Today's journey is the shortest one throughout the 23-day itinerary of the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek because we only have to walk for three hours. After that walk, we reach our stop for the day, Samdo. The route from Samagaon to Samdo passes through juniper forests and lovely Yak pastures. From there, we ascend on a ridge and fall all the way down to the Budi Gandaki River once again.

Samdo is a peaceful village with warm and welcoming locals, stunning scenery, and a traditional yak herding spot. Moreover, this place also gives some important insights into the Tibetan Culture. Also, how can someone forget about the Samdo peak when they are in the Samdo village itself?

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in the lodge
  • Place: Samdo
  • Altitude: 3690m

Dharamshala is the second last stop of the Manaslu Circuit Trek just before Larkya La Pass (5106 meters). This place is located at an altitude of 4450 meters and has very little settlement, tea houses, and food menu. Therefore, it gets a little difficult for the trekkers to spend the night at this place. However, to make sure that you do not get exhausted by walking too much, we have planned a stay at Dharmashala before reaching the Larkya La Pass.

Remember that Samdo to Dharmashala trekking is a difficult journey with an endpoint of reward. Just a day more and you can see yourself standing at the Larkya La Pass. As Dharmashala only has one tea house, we tend to reach as early as possible. Nevertheless, the actual adrenaline rush that trekkers seek is offered by the Dharmashala and Larkya La Pass trek.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in the lodge
  • Place: Dharamshala
  • Altitude: 4450m

Prepare yourself to finally get the reward that you have been struggling to get for 18 days straight. On the nineteenth day, we set off on a journey from Dharmashala to Bhimtang but on our way, we also stopped by the Larkya La Pass. Larkya La Pass is the highest point of the entire Manaslu Circuit with the Tsum Valley Trekking itinerary.

For an efficient and safer trek, we need to leave Dharmashala as early in the morning as possible. This route of the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek offers you some of the majestic views of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kanguru, Minjung, and the massive Annapurna II peaks. The trail follows several steep, forests, and icy paths, which make this the most difficult part of the entire Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek.

After eight hours of a slightly difficult (than usual) trekking expedition, we reach Bhimtang, where Adventure Bound arranges an overnight stay at a comfortable lodge.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in the lodge
  • Place: Bhimtang
  • Altitude: 3590m

It's finally our time to descend from the Manaslu Circuit and on that verge we descend from Bhimtang to Tilje on the twentieth day. The route is almost similar to what it was while ascending. However, you might feel certain changes in the weather and vegetation due to the change in weather and climatic conditions. Nevertheless, it's all fun and games while getting down due to which, it only takes five hours to descend from 3590 meters to 2300 meters.

Overnight stay and dinner will be served at a lodge in Tilje. However, before that, you can explore the area and interact with the locals because we will have enough time until dinner.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in the lodge
  • Place: Tilje
  • Altitude: 2300m

Welcome to the last day of walking in the Manaslu region. Today, we trek down from Tilje to Dharapani and then bid farewell to the Manaslu Conservation Area with a drive back to Besi Sahar. The drive will be highly relaxing and fun because it will be after 20 days that you are getting on the bus. Within 7 to 8 hours of trek and scenic drive, we reach Besi Sahar. We will take a rest for the night at a hotel/lodge in Besi Sahar.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Overnight in the lodge
  • Place: Besi Sahar
  • Altitude: 760m

On the 22nd day of the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek, we finally reached Kathmandu. The drive from Besisahar to Kathmandu will be full of fun as the trekkers can share their experiences and they might have also made new friends in the Manaslu Circuit Trek Tsum Valley exploration. With in six hour drive from Besisahar, the bus brings us all to Kathmandu, where we will get off and our representatives will take you to the hotel. Useful Information

Best Season to Go for the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek

If you are into trekking and adventures, you might be aware of the fact that the Himalayas in Nepal are best if explored from March to May (Spring season) or mid-September to November (Autumn season). In these two seasons, the weather is very fine and you can trek under clear skies while getting the best views of the landscapes, mountains, and other surroundings. Moreover, almost all the tea houses and hotels open their services and you can also get multiple items on the menu.

Trekkers looking for extreme adventures also go for the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek in the winter season. However, due to excessive snowfall, extreme conditions, and similar obstacles, the hike gets more than difficult in the higher part of the Manaslu Circuit route. Moreover, almost all the lodges and hotels also keep their services closed because of extreme conditions. Talking about summer and rain, walking for so many hours might not be feasible in the summer and the route gets very slippery during the rainy season.

Based on all these climatic conditions and obstacles, we strongly recommend the trekkers ascend the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley in the spring and autumn seasons for the best experience and comparatively easier trekking expedition.

Electricity, Wifi, and Mobile Network Availability throughout the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek

With the advancement in technologies and efforts from the Nepal Government, there is access to electricity, Wifi, and mobile networks in almost every part of the Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley Trekking route. However, as we ascend through the trail, trekkers might have to pay some extra money for these services. Nevertheless, you can stay connected to your loved ones throughout the trek and also keep them updated about your advancement.

Other than that, the hotels and lodges also offer several other facilities like hot water, charging ports, WiFi, etc. Going to the Manaslu Circuit Trek with Tsum Valley exploration will be made full of facilities and even more efficient when trekkers have all these facilities.

Are there possibilities of Altitude Sickness During the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley trek and its Preventive Ways

Altitude Sickness is a common type of health issue that can happen when a human crosses an altitude of 3000 meters. During the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek, we need to ascend to Mu Gumpa on the first which is at an altitude of 3700 meters, and then to Larkya La Pass (5106 meters). This shows that there are high possibility of altitude sickness while ascending the Tsum Valley Route with the Manaslu Circuit.

However, altitude sickness can be prevented if you follow a few steps beforehand and a few while on the trekking journey:

  • To prevent altitude sickness, trekkers are suggested to go for some other trekking routes beforehand. This helps their body to adapt the climatic conditions and thin air at higher altitudes.
  • We also suggest trekkers drink as much water as possible because hydration can prevent altitude sickness significantly.
  • While ascending the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek, trekkers must have a strong mindset and stay proactive about the obstacles that can arise.
  • Make sure that you carry a sufficient amount of oxygen and energy snacks.
  • Keep a steady pace to refrain your body from exhausting while on the journey above 3000 meters.
  • Take proper acclimatization break and make sure to stop or return if you feel that you cannot ascend any higher.
